You should only use recreational drugs (marijuana, alcohol) for medical purposes, especially during developmental stages and years. You don't want to inhibit your growth, mental or physical. I agree used for anxiety, it is really helpful. The more you take care of yourself in your younger years the better off you will be.
Once your are an adult, I believe the use of these recreational drugs are ok if you are aware of what your reactions, behaviors, effects both short and long term are. If you are not negatively effected continue use.
If you are negatively effected you should discontinue use.

A lot of people "self medicate", especially people without insurance or who are too embarassed to admit they have mental health issues. It's really sad and doesn't work and leaves the person with an addiction to deal with as well and, in the case of drugs like crack, meth, alcohol or narcotics can actually make mental problems worse (especially meth, that stuff will wreck a person BAD).
Then there are the people who think they are stronger than addiction, addiction is just for wimpy suckers and they can leave it any time. My step-mother's family has so far buried 4 young men who thought that way
