Alcohol and drugs would be one step to self-medicate. (But then, an Aspie may logically weigh the consequences first).
My AS partner has been self-medicating all his life. He went through a 10-year stage of thinking he was an alcoholic, and he's tried every drug he's been able to get his hands on, to try to feel 'normal'. He read as a child about drugs and the ways they make you feel different, and decided that was the answer for him.
He always preferred speed (same kind of thing as Ritalin or Adderall, used sometimes for Aspergers) and when I met him he was always using it, which made him appear really confident. But if that was unavailable, he tried whatever he could find (and got in quite a mess a few times).
Eventually it was a simple prescription painkiller that made him feel ok about himself, without him actually feeling any different physically. He still takes it with his doctor's approval, but it's a placebo by now. He had a typical Aspie obsession with drugs for years, but now he's calmed down and there's no urgency to it.
