How old were you when you moved out of your parents house?

I don't feel mature enough to move out right now although I'm legally an adult. My mom is planning on moving pretty far away but I have a job and college and my friends here! I know I won't find that easily if I move with my mom cos I've been here all my life to aquire this. But I don't want to leave my mommy!! !

I know most 18 year olds are longing to get out of their parents house, but I feel like I won't be able to live on my own.

My basically NT daughter didn't move out of the house until she was 25, because of other challenges that she had. Everyone is different, and 18 is really young to be all on your own. When most people move out at that age, it's to a dorm - that's not like being all on your own. It's a good transitional situation: you have a meal plan, you don't have to go find an apartment and make sure the landlord is reputable, you don't have a bunch of different bills coming in (electric, gas, heat, water), and if you're having trouble, there's a resident adviser to go to. It's very understandable that you're not ready to be out on your own.

Good luck figuring out how you're going to handle this. It's a tough situation.

16 the first time, when I started my undergrad and moved into the dorms. My parents were local, plus they paid for the dorms/apartment rent so I wasn't independent then by any means. As jat mentioned, dorm life is like getting a "taste" of independence, without truly being as such. That being said, I was in some ways more mature than the other freshmen but less mature in many other ways. I moved back home when I was 18 due to financial reasons (SF Bay Area/Berkeley is expensive!!) and just commuted to school every day, then moved out again at 24 for graduate school. I'm completely financially independent now, and felt well prepared by 24 to do things on my own.

I'm 41 and still live at home. I did live on my own when I was in the miltary, but that is all.

17, when I went to college and lived in a dorm. But I'd had practice at age 16 when my father threw me out. I didn't get on with my family, so I didn't particularly miss them, though living on my own posed many challenges.

I'm 23 and still live with my parents.

I've got it quite cushy at home as they don't charge much rent, meaning I'm currently saving a decent deposit for a house. I've set a target for getting my own place by the time I'm 25, which is an achievable aim.

I moved out at 24, and wouldn't move back in if I was waterboarded. I get along with my parents well now, but when I lived with them, it was the worst. They controlled my every move, and called me every hour when I was outside the house. Needless to say, it was like being grounded, and having a girlfriend was pretty much out of the question.

Seventeen, to go to university. Hopefully I won't have to live at home full-time again.

I don't plan on moving anytime soon. I like having that financial security and I can bank my paychecks from work every week for college.

I can't imagine living on my own. I am an adult and have a degree, but I still live at home with my parents. I have no siblings either.

Haven't yet. I'd like to, but I don't have enough money to do so.

19, the year after I graduated high school.
I moved in with some acquaintences, and proceeded to drown myself in a sea of drugs and alcohol. I self-destructed for a few years, before cutting all people out of my life and living by myself. Looking back now, I wish I'd stayed on at my parents' house a bit longer. I wasn't ready for college or independent life at age 18-19. Almost ten years later, I actually feel as if I've finally reached that level of social maturity.
