Why is mentioning IQ such a no-no?

Is it because autistic people and people who get bullied tend to have higher ones than the average population?

I don't brag about mine by the way, it's 70 on online tests and I've not done a proper one. Nothing at all to be proud of (although it must be 100 actually as I was diagnosed with Asperger's and that required that but...)

But I don't get why people who have high IQs aren't allowed to mention it.

Other people mention things. Like people who are in sports teams, or who have a lot of friends can bring that up.

Makes me wonder if it's more about anti-autism than it is about anti-showing-off...

It could be that the general population has lower expectations for an autistic person, even if that autistic person has an IQ that is higher than average as you mentioned. My last IQ test (not online) said I have an IQ of 126, but my IQ was said to be 134 when I was in elementary school. IQ remains constant, so it might have been the fact that I was given some timed tests that I was being all perfectionist about that caused the apparent decrease in IQ score. I actually don't like to brag about my IQ test score either.

Typically when people mention IQ they are trying to show off I think. But at the same time I do get wanting to feel special, so I could see some prople wanting to be acknowledged for doing something they see as exceptional. Also most of the people I've talked to have said that IQs aren't an accurate way of assessing intelligence. I don't know if that's true or not. There does generally seem to be an attitude of IQ not being as important or impressive as some people think though. And I think on general ot is at least usually ok to embrace your own intelligence as long as it's not in a condescending or mean-spirited way.

Yeah, I agree it's showing off, but surely when people say 'I have a lot of friends' or 'I got laid last night' they're also showing off. So what's the difference?

All I can think of is that it's hatred towards geeks (or rain-man stereotype autistic people).

I like intelligent people. Intelligent people tend to get bullied a lot actually.

I don't like to say I'm intelligent (fear of humble bragging and also that's for someone else to judge) but I am quite an academic when it comes to things like the humanities and the arts. I love to learn about that sort of thing. That doesn't show up well in IQ tests though. It's still socially unacceptable to mention it.

Personally I don't really care for people going on about how many friends they have or if they got laid either, but to be fair, I'm socially inept and asexual so of course I don't, and I certainly wouldn't hold it against them or judge them for it. But yeah, I don't think it's bad to be proud of who you are, as long as it's for something that isn't for something terrible, like you know, murder and such. I don't like to talk about how smart I am either, and I get uncomfortable when people I know talk my intelligence up because it feels like they have a vision of me that is going to be entirely impossible to live up to, considering I never actually bothered to improve myself academically. And I'm kind of an idiot most of the time.

Edit: Also I don't think it's a hatred for geeks, or at least it is generally more acceptable to openly identify as a geek, though a lot of geeks would probably insist they're not that smart either.

I see nothing wrong with stating IQ as a factual remark. The problem comes in thinking that you have personally done something worthy of merit and praise if you have a high IQ. Or that having a high IQ makes you a better human being.

I took an IQ test once and came up with 148, which my mom told me is 12 away from genius level, but I've never thought that much about it as I still struggle with social interactions, have no understanding/interest in politics, and oftentimes can't express myself verbally like others do.

Probably because people think they are real instead of admitting that they are pseudoscience on par with astrology.

I think people are scared of thinking about IQ because the general perception of it is that it doesn't change. Which I guess can cause a feeling of futility. Being skinny, getting laid, earning lotsa money…...none of these things are stable. And people do overvalue IQ, even people who have high IQs themselves and should know better.

My issue is when people use their intelligence to act superior and put down others.

"smart" should not be a compliment.

"stupid" should not be an insult.

it's annoying though. teachers/counselor types keep claiming everyone is "smart". what the flying f**k? Dualism. bell curve. if everyone is "smart", it means nothing to be "smart".
