Why do people go to the movies in groups?

I don't understand why people who don't live in the same household or aren't romantically involved with one another would bother making arrangements to meet up and see a movie together. It's dark and you can't talk to one another. It seems like a lot of energy spent on rushing somewhere to sit and ignore each other. I'm totally confused by this. What are your thoughts?

Well I still like to whisper comments in people's ears and in some cases I can enjoy seeing a smile on a friends face. Besides, I'm usually in a good mood directly after a movie.

Whenever I usually go to the cinema it's arranged by someone else,
so the reason I'm with people at the cinema is usually tied to why i'm at the cinema in the first place...

I agree with you when you say about going through so much trouble to merely ignore each other, though.

They may not necessary only go see the movie then each head their own way, plenty of other activity that can be done after or before the movie.

It does sound silly, the way you put it.

I guess they like to feel close to a bunch of other people, hang out afterwards and discuss the movie, or they are just scared of rapists and murderers, so they travel to entertainments in numbers for safety.

Its an excuse to socialize but w/o the pressure of needing to carry a conversation the entire time your with others.

I don't think everyone does. My boyfriend is NT and he sometimes goes to the cinema and watches 2 or 3 films on his own if he has a day with nothing to do.

It's a shared experience, which you can then comment on afterwards. Also, you can go elsewhere before or after. I like seeing a film with one or two people and then dissecting it with them once it's over. It's fun to hear other people's opinions, have debates, get into arguments, etc.

When I worked for Radio stations that had ad tradeout deals with local cinemaplexes, I did this all the time, 'cause it was free.

Personally, I prefer to wait until it comes out on disc and watch it at home alone, on Blu Ray in Surround. No tall people sitting in front of me, no jerks answering their cell phones, no kids giggling and whispering, no crazy people talking to the screen, and I can drink beer and pause the film to use my own restroom. Much better than going to a theatre.

I really want to find an independant cinema where they play old movies, then go on a long movie marathon. I feel my cinematic experience needs to be broadened.

I have no idea. That's almost as confusing as the trend of females flocking to the bathroom in unison.

Though, that said, I do enjoy going to the cinema with family, mainly because we talk on the way there and on the way back, so I assume NTs enjoy doing the same with their friends.

They don't want to be the creepy person sitting at the back of the movie theatre by themselves.

I sometimes go to the cinema with friends. There are several reasons for me, to do that:
- I don't like to go to the cinema alone;
- I can talk with my friends about the movie while we are on our way to the cinema;
- It is often about the new movie which is not soon on TV;
- We can discuss the movie when it ends and we are on our way home;
- During the pause and after that, we can drink beer and eat sweet or salty popcorn.
