A while ago when I was at the gym this instructor came over to talk to me. When I started talking he bent down slightly and put his clenched his fist over his mouth kinda like he was about to burst out in laughter. Or it could have been that he was trying to sneeze? But i don't think so becasue he did not say excuse me or pardon me.

why do you think he did this?

Perhaps he was doing his best not to embarrass you.

People don't have a reason for every action.
I think you're probably over-analysing it.

He saw something funny and wanted to laugh, but realized that doing so would embarrass you. So, he suppressed the laugh and didn't say anything, which might have drawn attention. Ideally, he might not come over in the first place, but he had no idea what was going to happen.

People don't always say excuse me when they sneeze, especially if it's suppressed.
