Is being angst, cynical normal.

I am learning social skill through movie, the other day I saw a movie called "Donnie Darko", and people in it is super cynical in the way they interact, I do fool around sometime but not as extreme as this, I don't know is this normal or just how it is in the 90s only. The question is :
Is this the way people being "real" and not "fake it" and acting like this will get you real friends ?
