I am very much capable of communicating with another friend on a one-on-one basis.

But add a third (or fourth, or more) person to it, and it usually ends with the two other people chatting with each other and me silently fading into the background.

Not taking something like that personally is extremely difficult, even when my intellect knows that is exactly how I should be handling those situations.

Anybody else know what I am talking about here?

Yes, exactly know what you are talking about. I think I end up smiling and laughing. I think I just end up listening most of the time... I find that if I try to ask a question, because I'm so curious that it could make them break the group formation and then start closing it off. leaving me outside of the circle.

Very much.

The advantage over one-on-one communication is that I'm not responsible for keeping the conversation going.

Yeah . . . one-on-one is preferable. I can't figure out the logistics of group discussion and end up sitting quietly nodding and laughing at the appropriate time. It does leave me feeling isolated. But in a group situation I can't concentrate enough to form coherent words. Too many people looking at me.
