I hear a lot on this forum about people saying they come off as younger than their chronological age, usually by about 5 to 10 years. I think that applies to me too, and I'm wondering if understating my age by a few years (just 25 to 20 or so, nothing under 18) couldn't create a bit more congruence so people don't find me so "delayed."

i typically just keep my age ambiguous, it's just a number after all, so aside from authorities (drivers liscence, drinking age bladiblah), noone really needs to know

I would've done at college because I was quite behind in education, but I can't be dishonest about that kind of thing. The teacher almost shamed me for admitting it to the other students.

I'm going to be in that situation soon. I changed my age on okcupid to be lower after seeing some response statistics.. but I'm not sure it's worth it because now my experiences don't line up with the expectations for my age OR presumed age!

You're only 23, but you still lied about your age to sound even younger than that? :?

It's never a good idea, IMHO. There's a dishonesty factor that could hurt you later on, and the fact that someone would even give age that much thought seems odd. If there are no legal reasons to be concerned, then it really doesn't reflect much on anyone.

I've never lied about my age, but for a while I did feel weird and uncomfortable about the fact that my age and "the rest of me" (not just appearance but also manner) did not seem in step with each other. They still don't, but now I don't mind anymore, and just go ahead and tell my age. I get surprised responses, but anything else a person thinks about me, if it's negative, is their problem.

But, as I say, I didn't always feel that way, and for a few years I went through an awkward stage of feeling actually embarrassed that I was getting to be this "mature" age that did not gel with how I am.

People don't usually ask me my age. When the subject comes up people often think I'm about 5 years younger than I am. Why correct them... :D

lying is lying, I don't care if it's about age, it's still dishonesty.

I used to up until last year when I turned 14, I felt more comfortable saying my age now.

I don't correct people if they underestimate my age, but I don't ever lie about it. I might dye my hair and beard in order to avoid standing out any more than I need to, though.

statistically there was a cutoff at age 23 (I only changed it to 22). Average response rate drops at age 23 for those with low income. up until 22 you have value as a college student but after that there is something wrong with you. Statistically I was in the 5th percentile (1st being fewest responses). with my age at 22 I am in the 45th percentile. I went from only getting 2 replies a month (sending 10 messages a day) to getting 5 replies a day (assuming 10-20 outgoing messages) after the change. This didn't necessarily increase the quality of the messages but I got 1 number in 2 months vs. 4 numbers in 2 weeks (this is week 3 since I made the change). I've been able to set up 3 dates. From a morale standpoint I was getting pretty depressed at being ignored before whereas now at least I can pretend like I have some social equity.

People often think I'm 18 or 19. I don't see what the difference is between looking 19 and looking 23. Maybe it's because I am not very knowledgeable about things what people in their 20s evidently should be, so that makes people think I've not long left school. Well I am basically in my first ever paid job, as it's taken me so long to find a paid job due to too many insensitive and clueless employers who seem to think Aspies are too stupid to work.

Times have changed, though. Years ago, back in the 70s-90s, people in their 20s looked and acted and just seemed a lot older. Probably because the perm hairstyle was the fashion back then, and perms usually make people look older. Also it might have been the clothes they wore too. And back then most people moved out and got married early and settled and had children in their early 20s. But now, a lot of things seemed to have changed. A 24-year-old could act or look no different to a 17-year-old, especially that most teenage to 40-year-old girls have their hair long and have all these different hair-dyes and all these gadgets that they use on their hair what makes them look younger. Speaking of gadgets, technology has improved an awful lot since the 80s, so a lot of youngsters these days communicate by mobile phone or computers, so a girl staring at her phone could be anywhere between the age of 16 and 30. And it has become more harder for youngsters to move out (all of my cousins are NTs in their 20s and they still all live at home with their parents). And jobs are harder to get too. And today's kids are too mollycoddled, which also doesn't help them adjust to the adult world as quick as they did 40 years ago.
UK speaking that is, I don't know about anywhere else.

I usually just avoid mentioning my age. If I have good social skills people think I'm in my early 20s, if I don't they think I'm 14.
