Getting in trouble?

I once said "no one is rude to me and gets away with it". My dad then responded "that attitude will get you in trouble"

What type of 'trouble' does my dad mean?

I think he's worried that your anger over rude comments might get you into trouble -- perhaps a physical confrontation? It's best not to give idiots the power to work you up too much.

All kinds of trouble.

* Your boss is a jerk to you, but you don't have enough money for first and last month's rent on a new place. IOW, you get fired in a way that makes you homeless. ...And now you need to find a job with a bad reference.

* You meet a cop who is a jerk. If you hurt his feelings you'll probably be arrested on false charges, possibly be beaten and maybe killed, especially if you're the wrong race.

* Guy at a bar or wherever is a jerk to you. He is crazy-violent when drunk, and/or just smoked some speed and has a knife or a gun or 6 friends with knives and guns.

* Etc.

That statement kind of gives off a "don't mess with me" type attitude, which does get you into trouble. I've learned the hard way that fighting back when someone provokes you only gets you into trouble. I've had several incidents like that where I've fought back, and it never got me anywhere.

It basically means that sometimes it's best to turn the other cheek and rise above what people do/say rather than to protect your pride and respond.

By "trouble" your dad was probably referring to potential physical confrontations from people who feel like they always need to get the last laugh (so to speak).
