About 6 years ago I worked in a warehouse with two people who dated off and on for a while. At some point one of them decided to dump the other one.

The one who got dumped tried to make it by work attempting to win the other person's heart again but failed every time. This included giving them a holiday gift Christmastime six months later. Once again their ex turned them down by saying they could "Can't except this gift" and gave it back to them in front of everyone else while on the clock.

Why couldn't they have accepted their gift? I know it didn't mean they could go out again but more of a friendly level? I don't understand this.

If the person is giving you the gift in an attempt to win back or express romantic affection, it could very misleading to accept the gift. It could give them the impression that their attempts to win you back were working, when in fact you had no intention of ever getting back together.

Sometimes people don't even want to be friends after they break up, in which case accepting the gift would be wrong. (How would you feel if someone took gifts that you offered them as expressions of friendship, without ever intending to actually be your friend? I would feel used, personally.)

I see your point and I know I woudn't appreciate it if someone took a gift that I gave to someone who didn't really like me or want anything else to do with me.

I don't know. If that was me. I'd say 'thank you; we can be as friends only' smile and walk away lol.

I think guilt,but personally I wouldn't feel guilty...
