My mom often orders me to call people on her cell phone as she drives me home from school. She always directs me on what to say to the person, and to tell her what the person says back. Sometimes i have to hold the phone away from my ear, just to be able to understand what she is saying. Then she yells at me for being rude to to person (when
s/he's not even saying anything). But I CANNOT talk to two people at once on two different subjects. She doesn't buy this at all no matter how clearly I tell her. She's like "No, you ARE capable of multitasking. you just need to practice." This is really pissing me off, for she's acting like all the misunderstanding parents of autistic children, and all it's doing is making me want to avoid her more. Besides, if she's just going to be telling me to speak her words all the time, why can't she wait until she gets home, and call the person herself?!? I know she's up to something! I know that she wants me to get an A+ in "acting normal." She thinks that I'm completely cabable of multitasking, and with this kind of torture, it will happen. my god!

I moved out the week after I graduated high school, because my mom was so horrible.

Tell your mom to buy a cell phone with a speakerphone AND a headset so she can drive and talk at the same time. Or better yet, tell her you learned in school that some ridiculously crazy number of people die every year from driving while talking on the phone.

You two are not just having a phone problem, she's having an ignorance problem. You need to somehow tell her to listen to you. (Which never really worked on my mother, so maybe there's not much hope)

It is very, very rude of her to ask you to relay phone conversations for her.

You should ask her what she thinks it feels like to be the person on the other end, or to be you, stuck in the middle. You should simply refuse to do it on the grounds that you've decided it's very rude and if she needs to talk to someone that badly she can pull over and call them herself or wait to talk to them until she's not in a car.

lol, that's easy. next time she asks you, call and say everything you shouldn't say. it's crazy, but i promise you she won't do it again. be creative, it can actually be quite fun (not for her, eheh).

This used to be my least favourite situation at work. One of the more senior employees would tell me to call someone so I had one hand on the phone and then had to cup it with the other hand and relay the responses back and forth...god only knows why they didn't just speak to each other themselves; I think it was a self importance thing or something.

This sounds really annoying. I hate the phone enough as it is, but to have someone telling you what to say as well  I really feel sorry for you. I think the handsfree idea is good though - then she can make her own calls.

That sounds just stupid to me. Why would a grown normal woman want to have her kid 'relaying' conversations for her to teach them how to multi task? God, I feel so sorry for some of you kids out there, seriously.

And you are supposed to be not the normal one..?? I think not. In this case, your Mum is being totally ridiculous.

Tell her you are scared of brain cancer from the radioactive frequencies!

Next time she does it just tell her you can handle it, sounds like you can.

I feel bad for you.

Try the hands-free suggestion.
