I often find myself in situations where conversations make me feel awkward, upset, or just bored, and I don't know how to politely leave the conversation. I've been told it seems rude or abrupt, or that sometimes people think they did something wrong. How do I avoid this?

You wait for the other person to stop talking and then you could say something polite like along with smiling. "Well it was great talking with you but I really need to get going." Then say your goodbyes and move on.
