Why open profile on social media?

I recently found a old friend of mine on Instagram. I could scroll her entire personal life for a few minutes. She has pics from her home, her bf, dog, family, job, everything was also tagged so I also could see exactly where everything are on maps.

To me this is just weird to be that open, but when I google why people choose to have these open profiles the only thing that comes up are "why do people have private profile?" like if that's was the strange part!

Why do people choose open profiles?

No, Im not refering to people with no personal pics at all, just those who has. Is it to gain more followers? Liking the attention? Get more likes? Not afraid of strangers at all?

I don't understand that either. I'd never want to just broadcast my personal life to the world. Plus, I'd always be paranoid that I'd reveal information that could help some crazy stalker or serial killer figure out how to find me in real life.
