I know most aspies have problems connecting with NTs. Right now Im in this group therapy sessions specifically for people around the college student age that have AS. And it dosent seem to make any difference the fact that there all aspie, I still dont connect with them. We where talking today about the group dynamics. And the general responce was, that they can just be themselves and they didnt have to try and sensor out so much things. While thinking that I frequently sensor out whats going on in my life to the group. I've figured at least one thing, Im easily disadvantaged my the enviorenment of a "group". I suck with groups and its nearly impossible to connect with a person within the presense of a group. If I cant talk one on one or in a very tiny group of 3 the connection is rarely made. Im trying to think, Im I just being too stubborn minded and not giving anyone a chance because i soon realized right off the bat that I wasnt particularly interested in anyone. I admit I dont really make much effort. Or am i just so unique as a person I dont even fit in with aspies. Its confusing

I had the same problem with my teenage / young adult meetup group, so I stopped going. It was almost like the whole lot of them already knew each other, so I felt left out.

I can't spot fellow aspies in real life and I don't think I could get along with them either. Luckily, I found this forum with plenty of people that I can relate to. It also helps to feel "protected" by the anonymous nature of this discussion board.

I'm not good at one-on-one conversations, but my social akwardness really shines in a group of three or more. I never have the guts to interrupt an ongoing conversation between two people either.

I've wondered how I'd get along with aspies. I'd guess it's nothing too strange in your case, just that there's nothing about being with other aspies that makes it easier to connect for you. Makes sense to me, so I wouldn't worry about it (if you were).

That's expected.

(Aspies are introverted and tend to think differently from those around them.)

When I lived in the South of the State, I met up with an Aspie Group but didn't fit in much. I found I didn't care much for their company, actually.
then I came to a more Northern city in my State and I was embarrassed to be around them, too, too loud and opinionated? whew, I got embarrassed because they were trying to make the chef at the restaurant tell who he was voting for in the next General Election and the chef was letting them know that, as a businessman, he had to reserve his privacy about his choices.

dont get me wrong, I don't care much for the psychologists I meet, either.

It is OK to just have a couple of real friedns. I only talk to one or two at a time (sometimes 3) :) . Try to find people with simmilar interests or are eccentric/quirky. The rest of the people you talk to can just be acquantainces :)

In the group that I have gone to, I have found that I get along with Aspies at about the same proportions that I get along with the population at large. There is one character in his mid 40s who has apparently learned very little since 5th grade about not causing people to want to punch and choke him. He was only at the last meeting I attended. I hope he either spreads his butt cheeks apart enough to see daylight or gets disruptive elsewhere.

imagine my astonishment when I found out from one of the Aspies in my old group that they thought my habits the disruptive ones, and they didn't want to come to group so I could not 'flaunt my high function' in his face!

so I guess we never know who is judging whom!

I think what it is is that aspies may have similar symptoms, but they fundamentally have different causes. For one person, it might be that their sexuality makes it hard to connect with people, for another, it might be religion, still a third might have problems because their parents were crazy. (In my case I think it was more or less the later two)
