I'm just curious: Is it polite to enter a...pizzeria, for instance...and ask for them to break like a dollar without ordering something, or must you order something too?

Well, you can always ask. If you have to buy something to get change, they'll tell you.

Is it polite? I have no idea. But if you need the change.......

Its ok. Sometimes they might be like "ugh fine". Always best to buy a bottled 20oz soda then ring it up.

I'm not sure if it's impolite or not, but some places can't give you change unless there's a transaction. I know at my work I can't open the register, only during a transaction or if a MOD opens it.

I'm a business owner and I can tell you most people think it's rude to ask for change without buying. In fact, most business owners I know, myself included, can't stand it.

Most businesses, especially restaurants, need to keep refilling their change drawer all day long. If they have to give away change and not get anything in return, it's just more work for them.

It is rude. They're in business to sell you something, not act as a bank.

Also, one of the oldest tricks robbers play is to ask for change, and then when the cashier opens the register reach over and grab the money. For this reason, most businesses insist that you buy something if you want change.

i've done it a few times with no problems... it depends on the business, who's working, how busy it is, what their register system is like etc... some are fine with it, some aren't... just ask, what's the worst that could happen? if you're polite most people will be polite back but if they're gonna be gnarky about it they're really the ones with poor social skills

Couldn't a robber just as easily buy something, and then when the cashier opens the register reach over and grab the money? This does not seem to make any sense as a trick. If you're robbing them anyways, what's the difference of spending a buck or two on a drink?

Robbers are not usually known for their intelligence. Neither are store managers.

If your answer to that question is really lack of intelligence on the part of robbers and store managers, you have shattered whatever feeble faith I may have had in humanity as a species.

When the machines rise up, I will be on their side. :P

Think about it, though. If a robber were intelligent, wouldn't he find a way to get money that didn't involve the risks of being caught or somebody getting shot? And most of the store managers I've known weren't exactly the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.

I guess it's a good thing I get along well with machines.

no, they might simply not care, it's the easiest and best way, or they're doing it for the lulz (or 'kicks' back then) or for the thrill, are feeling ballsy, want to gain 'street cred', etc

I don't mind, but then again, the boss is asking for a robbery! Someone asking me to break something then trying to rob the drawer would get a red carpet from my a**. He seriously leaves the key in the freaking register at all times.

And no, I'm not saying where I work... I think one of the guys there logs on once in a blue moon...
