Government Concedes Vaccines May Have Injured Ga. Girl; Impact on Autism Claims Unclear (Law.com)
Government health officials have conceded that childhood vaccines worsened a rare, underlying disorder that ultimately led to autism-like symptoms in a Georgia girl, and that she should be paid from a federal vaccine injury fund.
Medical and legal experts say the narrow wording and circumstances probably make the case an exception -- not a precedent for thousands of other pending claims.
The government "has not conceded that vaccines cause autism," said Linda Renzi, the lawyer representing federal officials, who have consistently maintained that childhood shots are safe.

I thought it was clear from actually reading the story that the girl did not have autism, she had a mitochondrial disease that, after vaccines, got worse. I think the only reason autism was included in the headline was for sensationalism, and to get more people to read the story.

Why is it that everytime someone gets mercury poisoning of has some other reaction that claims to have caused "autism-like symptoms", we end up discussing the fact that that isn't autism?
There is no doubt that vaccines will be harmful to some people. That's why they have warnings on them. But connecting them to autism is just plain wrong, not to mention misleading.
By all means; stop vaccinating your children, get chicken pox, who cares. BUT stop blaming reactions to them on autism. Sheesh.
MrMark, this has been discussed at least twice already. You should be aware by now that it's a duplicate, since you were told as much the last time you posted it.

No this is the first time that it has been posted that law.com is now reporting that, "The government 'has not conceded that vaccines cause autism,' said Linda Renzi, the lawyer representing federal officials, who have consistently maintained that childhood shots are safe."

Any story like this is going to appear with slight variations in a whole lot of news outlets. It's unsurprising that one of them ran a quote that some others didn't.
It's disingenuous to start a new thread for each of a set of clearly related news articles with no reference to the earlier discussions.
I have posted dozens of news stories citing no link between autism and vaccines. Alex did not have a problem with that. I found it a little hypocritical that he chose to lock the post of the second report of this story, but I vigoriously defend his right to do whatever he wants on this site, his private property.
I have news alerts sent to me for the keyword "autism." I select stories that I feel will be of interest to the membership and are likely to promote some good discussion. Only about 20% of those stories make the cut. I also post some news stories that have nothing to do with autism but are of interest to me and may be of interest to other members. Over the months I've gotten a pretty good feel for what will interest the membership. For that reason, I never post stories about economics or investment, despite the fact that it is one of my narrow, intense, personal interests, unless it also relates to autism. Occasionally I still get it wrong and post something that is of no interest to the membershp. Those threads quickly die a quiet death. This one will too if there is no interest on the part of the membership.
