Forget about all the tips here. Love for music is something personal and most good music needs to grow on you. I love music including more difficult music a lot (>600 cds), but for instance Dream Theater is just not for me. Not that I don't believe it is complex, I just don't feel anything with it (the only true progressive I like is early Genesis). That had nothing to do with the quality of the music, just with the way I listen to it.

As for the OP I believe there are two options:

1st: You just don't like music. Have you considered that? Just because most people do does not mean you have to. If that is the case just don't worry about it.

2nd: The second option is you are listening to the wrong music indeed. As a general rule music you like instantly will be simple catchy music. It will have some basic nice things, but probably won't grow on you. On the other hand there is music you'd have to invest in to find the true quality. This takes some effort on the part of the listener and ofcourse you'd need to know a little bit in front what you will like and what not (for instance I like melody most, while another might prefer rhythm).

If you'd like I can try to think of some tips for you (I believe I have a fairly wide taste including very hard metal as well as very sweet lovesongs, very weird jazz as well as very studied classic, etc.). But anyone who tries to give a good tip will need some information. The most important things are:

1. what music did you like at first and what specific things about them did you like?
2. what made you think it was crap later on. Was it boring you, not stimulating enough, annoying, too much noise all at once, etc?

some of the music I have listened to and liked includes, queen, black sabbath, the scorpions, eagles (old songs), talking heads

I get really obsessed with the lyrics and alot of time if I don ot like the lyrics it does not matter how great the musicians are I will not listen to them :? This happened with nirvana, rage against the machine, and pretty much any other song I have found or I it is the opposite, I do not like the musicians, but I like the lyrics :?

I do get bored of hearing the same old songs and then get depressed that there is no new music that I can really like. I am also very picky musically, but soomehow have a desire for really innovative and creative music :?

That seems very strange to me, my problem is more that I like too much music!! My music collection just keeps growing and growing and soon I won't have any more room on my computer for it all. 8O

Have you gave metal a try? I like all metal. And metal is a very broad range of music. It ranges from Megadeth to Lamb of God. Lamb of God is death metal (very hard core, screaming, hard to understand) which I think is pretty cool. Megadeth isnt screamo but the guitar is pretty heavy. Just a suggestion. And those are just two bands. There are MANY more. Godsmack is my favorite. But there are also Metallica, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Bloodsimple and to many mroe to count.

Try the link I gave. It has thousands of bands in almost any genre. I recommend browsing by genre, you never know what you'll find.

I think I just died a little... let's start, then:

1) Oh my ****ing Satan... DEATH METAL?

Lamb of God are generic, pretentious metalcore... for Death Metal, see: Morbid Angel, Deicide, Nile, Akercocke, etc.

2) Megadeth != Heavy. They're technical, yes. But they're as far from Heavy/Brutal as you could possibly imagine (Opeth are a good way to introduce you to heaviness, but only their first 3 albums... f**k)

So primarily not-too-complicated classic rock, but you don't mind it being a little heavier some of the times? Do you like noisy experiments some of the time? And what aspects of songs you like are good?

I am a bit luckier than you. I can forgive one of them being not so good if the other is impressive (explaining my Leonard Cohen collection :)). What do you like or dislike in lyrics, I mean things like being (too) personal, (too) philosophical, (too) whiny, (too) dumb or trying to be too intelligent? There are a lot of approaches in lyrics I can find interesting.
And ofcourse it matters where and how it is brought. Lyrics like 'don't give up' could be terrible if not for the great way of bringing them by Kate Bush and a song like 'green grass of home' is mediocre at best but gets a whole new dimension when it is sung at a concert in prison. But for now I like to know what you like and what not.

I don't see anything wrong with a desire like that :). But try to be not TOO picky and give some music a chance. I have noticed some songs need from months to even years before I really get what is going on and start to like them.

If he was about now, id guess he might listen to some obscure concious hip-hop rapping about existential angst, mysticism, quantum theory & s**t like that. except such an obscure sub-genre couldnt possibly exist.

oh wait...

Hey... don't sweat over it.
I'm not into any sort of popular music at all. Can't ever find anything mainstream that I can get into.
Only thing I listen to and enjoy is videogame/movie soundtracks and some occasional j-rock/j-pop.
Try finding a music culture niche for that.

matsuiny2004, I was in that boat for a little while. I actually never got into music at all until just a few years ago.

What I recommend is setting up a free account on Pandora Radio. It is a site for creating streaming stations to fit your own tastes.

If there is already even just one or a handful of artists you like, you can put those in, and Pandora will find music that has similar qualities. You can then rate songs using a "thumbs up"/"thumbs down" system, so the station is custom tailored to your tastes.

I've found a lot of great music and genres that I didn't know existed due to Pandora. Being one who buys CDs of the albums he really likes, Pandora has resulted in me spending a lot of money. :D
