Why was WP down on 12/28 evening? Was it due to one of those Santy worms?

No. The server has been misbehaving because it keeps getting attacked.

i agree - retaliation or taking revenge suggests that one still has some attachment to or interest in the offender. ignoring them shows that they're not worth taking notice of. of course, one has to ignore them quite witheringly.

I'm not very sure he meant that, though, considering his reputation for "cheerfully disagreeing" with people who talked all sorts of nonsense. There's a kind of nonviolent resistance which involves "walking the second mile with them"; that way you take control of the situation, and that's what is humiliating to them. It's a bit counterintuitive, but often extremely effective.
