My brother got married this weekend, and the whole thing was very nice - my brother was radiant with joy - with the exception of one thing. Towards the end of the night, there was a band playing music in a large hall so that people could dance. It was so loud that I couldn't even stand to be inside the building - it was physically painful - but it was cold outside. Luckily, a relative left early and offered to drive me home so that I didn't have to stand forlornly out in the cold, gazing in through the windows.

I never went to any school parties/dances for this very reason. Since only ~ 5 people (out of ~200 guests) had enough of a problem with the noise to stay outside the building, and none of them had as much of a problem as I did, I think that I can safely say that I either process sound differently than most people or that I have waaaaay better hearing than most people. I really would have liked to stay for a while, though, and watch my brother and other relatives dance.

two questions:
does anyone else relate to this?

and has anyone found a way to cope so that they are not driven away from social settings where the amplified sound is too loud?

My ex was a musician. I've been to a LOT of band practices/ gigs. I learned to tune it out, can't quite explain how. At one point I had to sleep in the jam room because they practiced from about 11pm to about 3am, and I had to get up for work at 6am.
I became known as the person sleeping in the corner. Yes, people would come watch them.
(I was there because my ex didn't have his driver's license yet.)

I take special "musician" earplugs with me everywhere.

That was what I was going to suggest earplugs.
