cat and hamster
In May 2006 My rat died, he was in my hand and he went peacefully. I hope he is in a better place now. Now I have a cat and a hamster that are getting old. I know that hamster hasn't got long to live. He is slowing down. My cat is a 14 year old siamese/tortoise shell crossbreed. She is really smart and is a good friend. She is not too shabby, she still goes outside. I think she will be just fine. I wouldn't say the same about the hamster.

So sorry to hear about your rat and now the hamster. Hope you have many good years with your cat. A few years ago all five of our cats were old to quite old. Three died within about 18 months. It is just miserable to have to say goodbye like that to someone who has shared so much of your life, but it is a part of life with relatively short-lived species. We now have three younger cats (didn't mean to get them, but they desperately needed homes) and I keep fast forwarding mentally to when we will lose them, too.
I hope the hamster has a peaceful time. It will still be hard on you, but you know he has had a good life with you to care for him.

If the hamster is slowing down and soon may not be able to keep ahead of the cat, then you should put it in a cage. If the cat eats it, I'm sure it will be fine - unless it gets stuck in her throat. I agree about the hamster though... it won't be ok if the cat eats it.

Just kidding really
There's not much you can do when a pet dies. Life goes on.
If you were a good "owner" to a pet, and you feel that you gave the pet a good life, then you've done the best you can. If the hamster dies of old age, then it probably feels, from it's own perspective that it's had a good life.
When the time comes, just move on and adopt another pet to look after.
