Latest Obsession : Freaking Fairy Wings

Last Halloween I helped my little cousin make a punk fairy costume based off the old threadbanger fairy wing tutorial. (We also reconstructed a cool rockstar energy drink t-shirt we found at a thrift store, and a turned an old ripped pair of my jeans into a tattered skirt).

I had this picture of the finished costume on my desk at work for a while, and started getting requests from co-works to make pairs for their kids and even some just wanted them for themselves to wear to ren faires and cons. I got further inspiration from a great video by Crafters Coast to Coast that showed how Emily Autumn makes her wings.

One co-worker suggested I add the wings to the things I sell from my henna booth at a couple local farmer's markets. Since then they have completely taken over my craft room:






These were my first alchemy on Etsy and resulted in a very colorful stock of glitter in my craft room.


This pair was inspired from the 7th Son character Binary_Fairy




These found a wonderful home with another vendor from one of the farmer's markets and got itself a twin as well. Her daughter and niece are going to be watermelon fairies for Halloween this year .



It also got me to start experimenting with spray paint on the wings, which lead to the pair that has been dubbed the superhero wings by a frequent henna customer's little boy (currently working on a mini set for him, he tries them on every week, but they are just too big for him).



And this one that is a mix of spay painting, glitter painting. The blue edges I did using the normal paint on the glue with a brush technique, but the fish were a new experiment. I've been playing with henna painting using old cones and got the idea to use a mehndi cone full of glue to apply more intricate designs to the wings. Plus I finally got to use these cool mother of pearl bead pendant things I've had forever.

Also in the last couple weeks I've gone a bit dragon crazy after a commission for a pair of dragon wings to be used on a dragon shaped branch (I wish I had a pic of the branch, the details she painted on it were amazing).



My partner in the henna business commissioned three pairs after see these for her families Halloween that I'm really excited to get started on. Her husbands will be a demon pair that I'm going to try using a stone textured spray paint to get the scale effect (he was emphatic about no glitter on his) and some skull beads I've had in my notions box for years. Hers will be these really cool jewel anime style angel wings. And their son will have a half and half pair adorned in flames. So far I have one of the frames completed and will soon be stretching and stitching them (for these more intricately shaped pieces I have been hand serging them to make the nylon behave).



A lot of people have been asking for pairs that can double as wall decor, so I've been working towards more detailed pieces and would also like to get around to using some like canvases. I'm working with figuring out how to get the paint thick enough that it doesn't leave such patchy spots so I can do details on the paintings (I ran into this problem with the binary fairy wings using regular acrylic paint).

A couple others I have lined up are a poker fairy set, a dragon fairy set (this one will definitely be more decor-ish), a clock work style steampunk pair (that I'm seriously considering using for my own costume this year), and a pirate fairy pair with a kind of treasure map feel to it.



Finally I'm working on adapting the method for making the wings into making other wall decor sculpture things. Currently I'm building the frames for two floral pieces (one just a simple flower to get a handle on the technique, the other an adaptation of a mehndi flower design that I really love).
