I first read this when I was about 11 or 12 years old and it struck a chord, not just for it's post appocalyptic themes but because it was about young outsiders who had something different about them that couldn't be identified but was feared and scorned by a cultural/social climate of religious facism.

Even today sometimes, when I look around at the NT world around me, the little insincere ballet, the circus of mundanity and stupidity, I feel a little like I did when I read that book for the first time while dodging school bullies and harrassment.

Totally agree. Excellent book.
I was about 8/9 when I first read it, but kept it like a totem of comfort in my mind, and it's been there ever since.
I can remember carefully examining my toes, just in case that was the answer I needed to why everyone else was different to me.
It also finished my allegiance to religion.

Zenna Henderson's People stories were another good exploration of being different.

Yeah, excellent book, Considering the time and cultural environment both books have a lot to merit their reading.

Good movie too from what I remember, I'm not big on to many remakes but it could make a good one.
