How do you discourage the question: "What's up?"

If you really have to discourage it, I've found out that telling the truth (briefly) works best

Yeah, I've had some success with that but how do you deal with the knuckleheads that still do it?

Hmm, that problem hasn't occurred to me... If they appeared interested (that hasn't happened) I'd continue. If they pretend, they have only themselves to blame

Ask why they said it? It isn't exactly an appropriate greeting.

Don't let it bother you especially if someon you know. They're just trying to be friendly and find out how you're doing. It's my standard greeting as well. I can understand getting weirded out by someone Ive never met saying it to me though but if its someone you know, don't let it bother ya.

My stock answers:

"What's up?" (The ceiling.)
"So, what are you up to?" (6'3" the last time I checked.)

Those types of greetings annoy me to. We say something similar in danish; directly translated it goes something like:

"What then?" And I always answer "What then what?"

I still haven't found out the proper answer to this question. The closest I've come is that it's like saying hello, so you say it back:

A: What then?

B: What then?

I simply refuse to do that.

its just a greeting.

In more formal circles when introduced and shaking hands, (here) you say "how do you do". The only correct reply is to say back "how do you do". That's all. Nothing more.

When greeted with 'sup?, a greeting is probably expected in return. No literal answer is required. You could just say "Hi, how are you?".
