What was the worst one your have experienced? Yesterday, there was an ice storm in my area and I have suffered a blackout. A transformer was knocked out and so I was out of power for more than 24 hrs. Thats my record so far. I was actually chatting when this happened...

Well, I was 12 and I was ALL ALONE at my mom's house. I was watching television when all of the sudden the power goes out. I then screamed really loud and started panicking because I thought someone was trying to kill me.
Then I ran to the front lawn and realized the entire court was experiencing the same thing. Silly me. :)

The worst blackout in Houston was the 2 weeks right after Hurricane Alicia, back in 1983 (I was almost 4 years old at the time).

But after hearing about "the big one" in the northeastern U.S. back in 1965, and the one in both the northeastern U.S. and Great Britain in 2003, the one in Houston in '83 wasn't so bad.

The power went out in my neighborhood a few years ago. It happened on a hot summer day. I wanted to call the power company to report the problem, but my parents wouldn't let me. They said if I even went near the phone, they would ground me for a week. (And why can't I call?) What's even worse is that they wouldn't let me go to a relatives' place, or even get a motel room with my own money. ("If you do that, then you're weak", they said. "That's not weak, that's smart", I thought.) They justified this with the logic that is they can tolerate not having power, I also have to. I could never understand why I had to suffer just because my parents chose to stay home and suffer, even though they had the option of going somewhere else that night. So now, I hate power outages with a passion, not because of the darkness (although it sucks), but because of the way they tear my family apart.

The power was out in my part of town for a full week after fierce storms battered the area I live in back in the summer of '04.

hmm...during the summer our power went out and during that whole day we worked inside the house.

during hurricane katrina i went to a small town called vacherie for three and a half days. we had no power and it felt like a week.
it was actually quite a life experience and i think i needed it to realize how easy my life is. when we left vacherie, we headed for houston, texas.

at first the hurricane was fun and exciting but it eventually became very hot. i was rubbing the nice cold metal handles on drawers during the night. we tried opening the windows to let some air in but the windows were sealed with tin foil and it was a nesting ground, as discovered by my mom , for hornets. i kept a small radio, that was only playing a news station, by my side at night. i don't remember sleeping alot.

Ok when I saw the title of your post I thought you meant blackout as in losing consciousness. I was going to answer when I passed out in my ENT's office after an allergy test.

The longest I've ever not had electrical power was probably close to 2 days. I barely remember it because I was a kid.

I experienced the 2003 Northeast blackout. I was 9 months pregnant and was really suffering from not having my AC.

During the ice storm of '98, we lost power for over 2 weeks. But this is Maine, and we're prepared for it :)

The power is pretty reliable here. The only time we ever have any major prolonged outages is when we have ice or wet snow The longest I can recall not being with out power.

Last November 10th (that date seems to be popular for bad storms to hit the midwest) the power was out for 14 hours after wet snow brought down tree limbs onto power lines, I was able to keep a light and radio on in my with a battery and an inverter so I didn't go stir crazy.

A similar thing happened on Oct 7, 2000. We were with out power for about 6 hours that night.

I remember a power outage that happened back in 1986 that hit at about 5pm in the afternoon and lasted until after I went to bed.

Four hours.

Every night I go comatose, hallucinate vividly and then suffer amnesia about the whole experience.

Hmm.

I'd say over xmas break.

there was a rash of outages from Newberg Oregon through a good portion of Washington state with several places not getting power til three or four weeks later.

-I was once visiting my grandma when a random outage happened in the darkest night. This was prior to the glory of backlit Gameboy models, and I think there was only one candle. Oh, and it was only around 7p.m.. That was hell only due to sheer boredom.

-Anytime I've been at work in the past two months and the power has gone out...everywhere else but our building. Powerouts do NOT grant you the right to be a jerk to me, nor the right to leave your trash all over the place.
