I think it's too broad of a question. Are you referring to plot elements? Characters? Mood? I mean, it's a bit like saying "How do you write a humorous sci-fi novel?" I've done a couple of those, but I never actually sat around and thought "How am I going to do this?"

I think you should check out the TV Tropes page on primal fears. It has a lot of resources with which to examine some of humanity's basic fears as well as the tropes surrounding them.
