There is a love interest in the form of Lana, but its fairly chaste, and they keep it professional. Maybe in the sequel...

Junko is a scientist, possibly with some medical training. She could be a supervisor for Stardust.

You could add something new or unexpected to the story. something that changes the outcome to the reader's eyes.

An uprising within the attacking army post assassination.

A third party stumbles into the mix.
