I know this is a different and new question, but when I read about schizophrenia on Wikipedia it said something about people with the condition having a 15 year shorter life expectancy. What exactly does that mean ?

To keep healthy and stay out of trouble, keep regular visits with your psychiatrist, therapist, and family practice physician. If you ever want to do something that doesn't add up, or feel compelled or hear voices telling you to do something, consult someone first before doing it. I have a friend that does that and it has saved them a ton of [non-criminal] trouble in their family life.

I don't talk to those kind of people ever since I was locked up in a mental hospital for nine days during Christmas. I never ever want to go back to a place like that again. Have you ever been locked up in a hostile facility with a bunch of mentally unstable drug deprived teenagers ?

Not to sound like I'm trying to be mean or anything and I apologize if I did, but I hated being confined in a building. I hated how the staff could leave if they wanted to and see their family for Christmas while I was slowly hating my Mother more and more.

psychiatrist's and therapist have long since lost my trust since I was tricked into being locked up in an asylum.......

I believe the person was talking to ME, therefore hurting my worthless unimportant feelings. I WASN'T applying fiction, and I don't need my brain checked. I just put my beliefs in there. Apparently he doesn't understand that psychosis can do this to people, making them believe weird things. Humans seem to not be smart as a group. Most humans are bullies. The only problem is that everywhere equates psychosis with insanity. Not all psychotic people are insane. Technically now a days its a legal term, "Criminally Insane" which means the mentally ill person wasn't responsible for their actions due to their illness. People use the word "insane" to all mentally ill people and that is wrong. That is hurtful, mean and nasty. I prefer to be called, "Mentally interesting." I know that delusions and hallucinations are insane to outsiders though. Last night I had this horrible, terrifying hallucination that someone was trying to break into the house. I heard loud knocking at 1 AM and my brother telling me in this creepy voice, "Someone's trying to break in... repeat many times" I was paralyzed with fear.

As far as the shortened lifespan, whydoyouask seems to be correct in that suicide is a major concern with those afflicted with bi polar, major depression and schizophrenia. Secondly, it appears they are more likely to have poor physical health.

THat is true. My life used to be utterly controlled by my schizo-affective symptoms. It most absolutely would of decreased my lifespan if I didn't make changes. But I did, and despite how difficult those changes were, I know they have increased my lifespan if I keep this up for now on.
