Anyone with an interest in any sort of music will have a taste for something that isn't particularly well known. There is a wealth of music out there and today even the most obscure artist has easy access to international exposure. The days when record companies and radio stations were the primary tastemakers have long passed. Though they still have a large role in distribution and marketing, they're a shadow of what they were pre-internet and before the enormous online social networks that have taken up that role today.

I had to vote for "a little bit of both" because some of my favorites have kind of "aged out" of awareness. King Crimson, for instance, used to be big - for a few years in the '70s. A lot of people these days only know one King Crimson song, if any at all, because "Court of the Crimson King" was used as a closing song on one of the Rock Band (IIRC) games.

One of my favorite bands is only famous in the San Diego area, largely because they seem to be reluctant to tour to anywhere that's more than a couple of hours' drive away. The Rugburns made some really good albums, though.

Incidentally, the Hiram's Guns & Liquor store mentioned in the song and pictured here is closed, and has been for a couple of decades; last I heard, though, their new store, Hiram's Guns & Nick's Liquor, is still open on Washington Street in El Cajon, CA...
