i wished i lived in a place with all those neat places to see. there is nothing out in the boonies, but more boonies.

i read in the obituary today that the "Star Hustler" Jack Horkheimer passed away today. before he was an astronomer for the masses, he was an accomplished organist.

this is an amazing example of genius on a pipe organ. it is a real pipe organ and not synthesized.
apparently it takes a lot of practice to be able to play a pipe organ because of the fluctuating delay depending on the pitch of the notes. high notes sound almost instantaneously, and low notes take some time to build up the air pressure in the pipe sufficient to bring the amplitude of the note to a normal listening level.

anyway, the fist part of the song may not be to many people's taste, so if you do not like the singing, then just listen from 1:39 to hear the organ solo. it is tremendously good. (actually, every instrument played in this piece is an example of exceptional talent)

there is a first time for everything. this was my first exposure to pop music involving a liturgical organ. as spock would say, "fascinating..."

there are certain musical genres in which a liturgical organ works best, and certain other genres in which nothing less than a theatrical wurlitzer [the kind with the sound effects and percussions] will do. the type of modern music featured in the youtube clip needs the liturgical organ, as a wurlitzer would be a gauche match, it has this in common with much classical music, ironically. but in pops and jazz, a church organ would require more care in the arrangements and would have to be used sparingly, lest the music turn into something sounding like a church service.

i laboriously restored a severely compressed mp3 download of an extremely rare buddy cole organ demonstration record in which he shows off his modified hybrid robert morton/wurlitzer theatrical pipe organ. very educational and what a player. he put the robert morton in one channel and the wurlitzer in the other channel, making for some scintillating stereo effects. google it, people.

Although I love all organs, I voted for Hammonds because that is basically what I use. Here is a list of the organs I own:
