i've been depressed all morning, so i slept in to try to just destress and then face my afternoon classes. when i got up, i headed for the kitchen to make some lunch. my roomate was in there, and i wasn't really thinking, i just walked on in there (it's a small kitchen, kinda cramped). in my mind, i didn't see a problem with both of us trying to do what we were doing in there. she moved on out, so i thought she was through (wrong). when i saw her still standing there, i said "do you need something?" i must have sounded like a real jerk. i didn't mean to. when she came back in and finished what she was doing, she left and i heard her whispering to my other roomated something about the way i just pushed her out of the kitchen and then an exasperated sigh. really, i didn't mean to push her out, it's a squeeze but two people can be in there, and i wasn't really thinking anyway, and i was only half coherent from just waking up. i hate screwing up, and i hate that her and my other roomate were whispering about me. i wish i could just do things right.

Don't worry about it too much. If she was still standing there, she did want something, be it something in the kitchen, space in the kitchen, you to apologize for somehow "invading her space" (which is absolute crap), something along those lines.

If she didn't say anything about you being in there, like "give me just a second and I'll be out of here," just something to let you know she wanted the space to herself, how were you supposed to know? More than that, you're roommates, that isn't her kitchen. It sounds like she's simply blowing things out of proportion. That's not your fault. The fact that they are talking about you behind your back, that's just childish. If they have a problem with you, they should have the decency of bringing it up with you directly.

Sorry shadexiii, but I completely disagree with you. If it's a tiny kitchen then jnet should have waited until the roommate was done. Yes, it's a shared space, but it's important to be courteous and mindful of another person's space. I'm sure jnet would want to be treated the same way, especially in such a tight space. It's hard to live with roommates, so being respectful of each other's space is important.

Jnet~ I would just apologize and tell her that you didn't realize what you had done. Tell her you didn't mean to run her off and that you will try not to do that again in the future. That should fix things for you.

just tell her you're sorry and thought there was enough room for the two of you.

do your roommies know of AS?

regardless, it's not cool to live with people whispering behind your back and you should tell her you don't appreciate that...

ah roommates...

I would have gone in myself and done what I wished to do. I really have no time for these social niceties etc. If there was space and you are both paying rent, you have equal rights to do what you want to in the kitchen, but that is my opinion. IT would be a different situation had you literall shoved them out of the way or something to make room for yourself. Personally though, my loathing of being in close physical proximity to anyone would keep me from the same situation.

Thank you all for your responses, and to doordoctor IM'ing me. You were all helpful. I have apologized to my roomie, and things seem to be better between us now. Even though my mistake was accidental, it still offended her, so an apology was the best option in this. I'll just have to be consciously mindful in the future.
