Think back; have you or a friend or family member ever coined a phrase?
Or can you think of any that you wish were in general use?

Post them here! :D

For example, my dad says this is one of his favorites that he's ever heard me coin:

"Don Bluth Gothic"

The work that Bluth has produced just has very strong certain feel to it, when it comes to the spooky stuff. It's not just spooky, it's ancient, it's foreboding, it's gritty, it's mythic; it has a potent atmospheric kind of power... it's... well, it's Don Bluth Gothic, and I couldn't think of any better way to put it.

I was describing an old Victorian house, more than a hundred years old, behind my grandmother's house. When I used that phrase, my dad seemed to know exactly what I meant.

My father sometimes referred to a person he was having a problem with, or whom he found a bit odd, as a Herbert Hobnob, eg "He's a bit of a Herbert Hobnob".

I never heard anyone else use this phrase, and can find no reference to it by googling etc.

I recently came up with my own idiom; I guess it would also be considered a phrase:
"Don't make a snowball out of an avalanche." ~ Hilary Renée

These are great! Laughed at Blue's, and the Herbert Hobnob thing sounds completely original as far as I can tell, too!

My previous boss used to say "...and that's the whole dog & pony show" when he finished explaining something to me, and I'd never in my life heard that before, but I've started to find other people who say it. I think it's hilarious.

Another contribution of my own: "Understand as much of the structure as possible before you attempt a demolition". A metaphor I came up with for myself about trying to argue against someone's position on something. Otherwise, it might not come down at all; or it might fall on you. :P

I like that metaphor Theta, it makes a lot of sense.

An old friend told me this one: "If everything is coming your way. You're in the wrong lane."

neat. i've been making ice caps out of snowflakes

my signature VV is a personal phrase i think is pretty original, with explanation needed, maybe.

i made this up just now : got the thick horchata. still not sure exactly when it can be used, i just finished some thick horchata since there was few left and it wasn't stirred well so all the solid parts sank to the bottom. hence, a thick creamy film on the bottom of my glass.
