one of my friends cut herself badly and I had to take her to the ER. we were alone when it happened, and I gave her the razor but also took it away... I feel so responsible, could I have stopped this, or reacted better?

Did you have any idea at all that she was going to do that? In the end, you cannot feel responsible, unless you told her to do it. People do what they are going to do, with or without your help.

No...ice is sometimes used by self harmers as a safer alternative to a blade.

As to your friend, don't let her/him make you feel guilty...did you know they would cut themselves? If not, then you have no responsibility. However, if you did know they are a cutter...might have been more sensible to not give them such a thing.

Even if you know someone cuts,
it's hard to tell that they're going
to do real harm with it. I had a friend
who did it regularly out of boredom,
and had he asked me to pass him an
x-acto, it's unlikely that I would have
even questioned.

'course, if he had really hurt himself,
I probably would have just laughed.

Not at all sure. Though I looked at the criteria,
and I think that I missed at least one requirement.

I'm sorry that this had to happen to you and your friend. Don't blame yourself. You did what you felt was right.

I hope your friend gets the help that they need.

Honestly, in your case, I would make sure that she recovers well.
