A doctor at work told me her brother has AS.

He went through a really bad time from 16 - 19.

He dropped out of school and suffered bad depression for a couple of years.

His Mum organised for him to go on a disability pension (in Australia you can get this if you have Asperger's).

His Mum insisted he attend therapy. He refused for the first year.

But finally he started therapy and he became very interested in computers.

He now works with computers, earning a fortune! He managed this without completing highschool or getting formal education. All self taught.

My doctor colleage says her brother is happy now: he works with computers and has friends equally obsessed with computers.

She says his bank account is very healthy, because he's not materialistic and earns more he can spend.

Kilroy, can you ask your parents if you can get therapy with someone who specialises in AS?

8O 8O 8O

How the hell did he get a disability pension??? I tried that at Centrelink (at the insistence of my father), and they rejected me! And while I am somewhat glad that they did (my father was being ornery), I am amazed, shocked, and a little jealous that another one with AS could get a disability pension when I couldn't. Was it because he was more, oh how can I put it, socially inept?

That's been an option but here-it's not so common...
I just am worried about my fututre-I remember I was very depresed around my 18th birthday as I don't wanna get older and face the world-because I am afraid of rejection, the pain and falure...

Sorry I don't know! And the doctor doesn't work in my department anymore. I'll see if I can track her down and find out. This may take me 1 week or more (I only work p/time).

What do you mean therapy has been an option? If your parents will pay for therapy do it!

And seriously, if your parents can afford it, come out to Australia and stay with our family. I will personally drive you to Tony Attwood's clinic for your appointments (It's called Mind and Hearts).

I drive there 1/week anyway - my car knows the way all by itself now! My boys see Ivy Gomez. She is absolutely brilliant!

http://www.tonyattwood.com.au/index.htm

I have my therapy with her too. She has told me I need to learn a 'unique set of skills' as a parent of 2 children with Asperger's. The boys ask me why I see Ivy by myself. I tell them I am having 'Mummy Lessons' so I can be the best possible mother for them. They say, but you're a good mummy already. Aren't they sweet!

The psychologists there charge A$160 per appointment (as Australians, the government pays a huge chunk of this fee.) To see Tony Attwood is more expensive (I'm not sure exactly, I think between A$250 - 300 per week).

I also want to clarify something I wrote in my last post. Although the person I spoke about managed to be successful without finishing his education, I absolutely encourage you to finish your education!

But you need to get yourself sorted before you go back to school. If it takes you a year to sort yourself - fine!

Do you have to go to school, or is there an option of internet schooling in Canada?

Kilroy, my 8 year old is suffering depression and he's only 8! And he's started therapy and is having an IEP implemented.

I can only guess at your level of despair at not having had intervention, and being identified so late.

My 7 year old was suffering from depression. But after 1 month of therapy and his IEP being put in place - his depression has gone. He is happy.

I really feel for kids/people who did not have therapy and IEP.

Seeing how much my kids have suffered at such a young age is heartbreaking. For this to go on for years must be absolutely devastating to self-esteem and mental health.

Regards and maternal hugs/kisses
Helen

yeah well we could never afford to go to australia
my parents like to focus on saving for my collage and big house (and the like)
(like I wanna go to collage)
I'd rather not go to therepy-then I gotta tell him/her things
(and 300 bucks a session-my parents would NEVER do that) just for my AS, seriously-here we don't get beans for me
Thankfully I've not requested anything that costs money so I'm not a burden
I've been to a shrink once before (he was an idiot)
I'm sorry to hear your children suffered/suffer Smelena-I could never have children with the fear of passing my AS on to them (I hate it and would probably have a breakdown if they got it-I've suffered/will continue to suffer until I die...
I have really no self esteem/self confedince left
no hope in the future
the only thing I know will happen is that I will die someday and go somewhere and if I live again hopefully won't have the thing that has made my life so terrible
I'd kill aspergers if I could
