Sorry to hear about the coworker being a jerk.

He is starting to tease and joke around with me about it now - which is OK, as I do like a joke. But at the same time I know he hates most animals and is the sort to shoot animals if he could, he just has no empathy for animals at all. So I think him being aggressively hateful about my pets is just disrespectful. Now that it's turned to teasing, I can take it with a pinch of salt.

Yes, I can distinguish between someone meaning something nastily and someone just teasing. I rather him teasing than actually expressing aggressive hatred.

Still, remind me to never invite him over at my house, just in case he might slaughter my fur babies.

He definitly knows he's offending you, he's a dick. Its the kind of behaviour that I brood over, power to you if you can think of a comeback or ignore it.

It really sounds like this guy is a bonafide jerk ..And never has had room for empathy in his life .
I have had pet rats growing up and came to understand that my rats had personalities, Same as other peoples pets.
I was quite fond of each and everyone of my rats . My brother used to not have empathy for my poor rat,And
Was very tortuous of my relationship with my rat. Fortunately . He would get bored after a time and leave ,my rat alone . I guess , I quit responding strongly to his .assaults on my rat and my relationships with them .
It was his way of torturing me as a person . And he was using my closeness with my rat to do this. It was hard for me to imagine such people existed in the world . But I have actually run into dog owners , who used their animals to attack me at my own home. These people , have no empathy for anyone.Or any living thing. I believe . And probably should only allowed to associate with others like themselves, instead of being allowed to prey on other humans .
I still have very fond memories of each of the rats, I owned over the years . Am very sorry your Rat has gotten old.
It was hard for me to understand about my Rats having a shorter life span. You sound like a lovely pet Rat owner.
