I seem to think it's only been in recent years that I started to understand some elements about politics such as left and right, conservative and labour (UK), democrat and republican (US) and so on. I barely knew much about it or was uninterested in my late teens and early 20s.

I started reading history (which involves politics) more in years after leaving school and it wasn't until that I understood it more than earlier. I still even now don't know which party I stand by or vote for.

I also listened to music with songs about politics like rage against the machine and system of a down. With rage against the machine, I didn't realise until later that there is rather left- leaning and revolutionary influences and political messages in their music but I still just like their music and I am not a "communist revolutionary" if I do. I remember some people calling fans those accusations because they liked the music which is just ridiculous.

Most people are political and some people understand more about politics than they realise

Just because you're not an academic in the field doesn't mean you don't have your own political stance

I didn't realise that I understood politics until I was in my 30s and I like political theory rather than who's who and what's the latest headline etc etc

There are different ways of understanding politics

Like you say, you get your understanding from history and music. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that

I get my politics from groupthink, which has landed me in trouble on the internet before, so I prefer not to say too much about politics these days.

No, you are not "late" to understanding anything about politics.

Rage Against the Machine are extreme socialists, like they believe Castro, Mao, and others were good.

TBH, don't feel too bad about not knowing a ton about politics. It was a major special interest of mine for over 2 decade and I was sort of a conservative activist. Wrote a lot of stuff online and called into talk shows. In the past 5-6 years my interest was greatly waned in politics, and I find it tiring, to an extent see it as a waste of time anymore. Sort of wish I had never gotten involved.

To an extent I almost take the George Carlin Stance on it these days-

Most people I know are just now starting to get invested in politics. Being 29, I feel like I come of age at a perfect time as far as being politically intrested. I was in college when the blm stuff started happening in 2014 and was 20 years old during the 2016 election. I remember taking civics in high school and that's how I learned about red, blue and swing states. I use to be super invested in politics, now I'm more focused on developing my relationship with God and studying theology.

Rage against the machine were accused of being hypocrites because were millionaires from the music they made while voicing commitment to leftist causes.

True yes. One thing that worth noting is, many socialists/communists usually come from privileged or at least upper middle-class families. Shared misery is fine for everyone else but not for them.

In my professional opinion digging into politics is just not worth it.

It's never too late to learn how government and society works, till they shut the coffin, or turn on the furnace.
