I’ve got this issue right now: the Job Centre here in the UK keeps pushing me to find work, but they don’t seem to understand that I simply cannot and will not do the kind of jobs they’re asking of me. The usual 9–5 warehouse shifts, kitchen work, production lines — I’ve done all that, over and over again, for years.

The problem is, it’s all mindless work. It’s neither challenging nor rewarding. Every time, my mind just rebels. I’ve walked out of so many jobs, not just because of the work itself but because of the behavior of co-workers. One example that sticks with me: some party-guy decided to climb on top of a hot box strapping table to turn up his music, and instead of getting down safely, he stayed up there dancing like it was Ibiza. That was the kind of environment I was expected to just “deal with.”

Right now, I’m actually trying to learn skills that matter to me — C++, HTML, other coding languages, even experimenting with Blender. But it’s hard to focus when I’m stressed out of my mind and pressured to go grab the “next job.” It feels like I’m being forced to waste time on something my whole self is screaming against.

The truth is, there’s nothing out there that feels right. Nothing I can do long-term without wanting to run out the door. Remote work would make sense, but from what I can find, the economy might as well be shut down — it feels like there’s literally nothing available.

I honestly have no idea what to do at this point.

I don't know what things are like in the UK but here in the US lots of people are struggling to find employment. Few people really like their jobs & much less are working at their ideal job. I'm not sure what the job center is but the employment assistance programs I worked with kept telling me to keep asserting myself with my job search. Their few suggestions were either things I was not capable of doing or nothing happened after I filled out the app. It's great you have options OP. You could try giving the job center ideas of the types of jobs you would consider doing. However if you really hate the suggestions they keep giving you & have no intention of pursing them it may be time to quit dealing with them.

The Job Centre in the UK provide financial support when you're out of work (typically referred to as benefits). However, in order to qualify for benefits, you need to agree to commitments (aka a contract). Once you've agreed, it can be difficult to get out of the contract.

You can submit a request to close your claim but you have to provide evidence and a good reason why you are leaving the job centre. The job centre can actually deny your request to leave. Although if you stop complying with them, then they can cut or stop your payments. If you've had your payments reduced or stopped in the past, this may impact your ability to claim in the future.

As someone in the UK who is currently dealing with the Job Centre, they are an absolute nightmare to deal with. You are assigned a Work Advisor / Case Worker who can contact you and try to force you to apply to certain jobs. You can write a list of preferred job roles in your work plan but your advisor can ignore this if they want.

I know they've often tried to make me apply to warehouse jobs that have unsuitable hours. "Have you applied to this job that starts at 3am?" No, I've told you that I do not have a car and there is a long wait for Ubers and Taxis. It is also in a dangerous area and I do not feel safe walking around alone late at night / in the early hours of the day. Also, with the sheer cost of an Uber, I would be losing money due to how little I would earn. "OK but life requires sacrifice" Sure, I'm not disputing that but I'd be the sacrifice if I got the job.

One time I had an advisor who, with a straight face, asked me "Have you considered moving to London?". I laughed in his face and asked if he was serious. To put that into context, London is significantly more wealthy than the rest of the country. It's also on the complete opposite side of the country. He really looked at their system for local jobs, sighed and said 'I don't know, move to the South, I give up'.

Honestly OP, I feel your despair. The Job Centre waste so much of my time. I really wish I had an answer but I'm in the same boat. I'm annoyed because in the last interview I went to, the interviewer revealed that the hours and position were different than advertised and it turned out that I couldn't do the job they were actually hiring for.

I would love to move (although not to London) because where I live now is actively making me feel depressed.

I hope things improve for the both of us. Hang in there.
