Why do corded landlines not need electricity?

Why do corded landline phones not need electricity or batteries to work?

There is a telephone building about 1/2 mile away filled with backup batteries for the phone system.
I used to drop off old phone books there.
They used high output carbon microphones that did not need amplification.

The telephone line supplies 50v, although this is being switched off in many places
