Is it weird I feel I'm not meant to make friends?

So there's this volunteer job I go to and there 2 people I would like to try to make friends with. But I'm very hesitant to ask for phone numbers these days because I don't want to feel disappointed if someone says no. And to to make it worse I don't want to get embarrassed if I ask someone if they would like to walk outside with me to ask in private because I feel like it would make me look I a mental illness and people will maybe think "what is up with this woman?" So is is it weird I rather I'm thinking would rather not be humiliated then try to make a new friend?

What kinds of conversations have you had with these 2 people so far?
Also, what about these particular people makes you feel that they might be good potential friends, or at least worth asking for their phone numbers?
(Your answers to these questions may help the rest of us get a feel for how well you know them so far, and, thus, whether it is appropriate to ask for their phone #, or whether such a request is likely to be successful.)
It is probably not a good idea to ask for their phone numbers out of the blue. But, if you've already had substantial conversations with them, then it MIGHT be appropriate to ask for their phone numbers, depending on what kind of conversations you've had.
