We do need a viable social democratic party, but people are too afraid to start one because it would siphon votes from the Dems and hand the Trump-era GOP victory after victory.
The latter is why the American political system is intrinsically two-party. Third parties intrinsically do not work here.

What's needed is NOT a new party. What's needed is for the left to somehow manage to popularize its views enough, and become sufficiently well-organized, that the Democrats become more left-leaning.
(To that end the left needs to, among many other things, learn from its past mistakes and avoid slogans like "defund the police".)
