Meta has added an interesting new option to Instagram – the ability to change the music used in the background of posts. You have been able to use background music for a number of years now, but once posted you’ve been stuck with your original choice.

The new music changing option makes it possible to opt for a piece of music that feels better suited on reflection, or to banish a choice from years ago that now feels embarrassing. Here’s how to change the music on old Instagram posts.

While there is an argument that it has been possible to change background music by deleting a post and then reposting with a different selection, this is not without consequences. Delete a post and post a new one, and you will lose any engagement, comments and so on from the original; it means starting from scratch.

With the new Replace Audio tool, you can change music without losing anything. It is being pitched as a way of giving creators more control over their content.

If you like the idea of changing audio, start by navigating to the post in question. You should then tap the menu to the upper right and select Edit. You should then see the option to choose a new music track.

Once the change has been made, hit Done and the updated version of the post will go live.
