That's a myth, I'm afraid. Snopes.

I find that sort of thing intensely irritating, the way it seeps into and corrupts knowledge. I was caught out by that one and several others, years ago, believing without question the false etymology given for it, and I've harboured a deep hatred for the original perpetrators of these lies ever since.

I've read The Wizard of Oz and (I think) bits of some of the other Oz books.

Read part of Pinnochio but got bored.

Read part of Charlotte's Web when I was very young, never thought to find it since. I ought to, I s'pose.

Never read Mary Poppins.

Have seen Oz on school stage and TV screen. I've only seen small fragments of Pinnochio, never seen Charlotte's Web or Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins is on my list of Films I Hope Never To Watch, along with things like ET and The Sound of Music. One of the benefits of growing up without a telly, I have the opportunity to keep snooty lists.

That is really neat...I love hidden meanings in things like that.

Interesting, I didn't think there was an original Little Mermaid.

As a kid, the Disney version of Hercules pissed me off. I was fine with it being violent; all I cared about was Hercules going around killing monsters. And you can find the original version (the one with the Twelve Labors and the death of Megara) in tons of kids' books.

Don't get me started on Pocahontas or The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

There were adaptions done before the Disney movie. Disney just added a happy ending and wacky animal sidekicks. The original is much more tragic (and has Christian overtones).

Pocohantas has been the subject of much misinformation. Her name was Matoaka and Pocohantas was a nickname roughly meaning little brat. She was about 12 when she knew John Smith and the story of her saving him was probably made up by John Smith himself. He was a notorious self promoter.

The Nostalgia Chick has a hilarious takedown of Pocahontas here.

That was great

There is actually a really good book on the Jamestown expeditions called "Big Chief Elizabeth" which is how they described Elizabeth 1st to Powhatan. It was written by Giles Milton and it is one fascinating read. It is also surprisingly funny in parts. I highly recommend it.

Another American hero who actually wasn't was Columbus. He and his men decimated the Arawak tribe completely.

John Smith in real life was also an older man with a beard.

I heard Wizard of Oz was originally a progressive novel, but otherwise have only read Charlotte's Web.

The "ruby" slippers were actualy silver. The color was changed for the movie. There were also several sequels written and "Return to Oz" was made into a movie but Dorthie was protrayed by a little girl instead of a teenager this time.

Yes, I believe he was sort of the Donald Trump of his day. :)

I've read Charlotte's Web. Also, although this book isn't mentioned here, I recently read the original novel form of Wicked, and it too was "dumbed down" and softened to become a musical.

I haven't seen the musical but I'm not surprised.
I thought Wicked the book was a great read.
I also read Son of a Witch and
A Lion among Men which follow.
Dorothy barely shows up in any of the books. The author really does a great job creating OZ history and culture.
Just imagine The Wicked Witch of the West as really a very Aspie like animal rights activist.

The older versions of things were very dark. Even Mother Goose.

I used to have a copy of Mother Goose and Grimm fairy tales, it got lost ages ago, but I still remember some of the stories, eep!
I've been looking half-heartedy for another copy, maybe one day I'll get it.
Charlotte's Web, that was the first full "novel" I'd read as a child. That illustration brings back those memories, I loved that book.

to Disneyfy is now a standard verb across all dialects of English:

New boss at Arsenal FC won't "Disneyfy" the team

Wiktionary--to Disneyfy

The term applies as much to Disney movies as it ever applied to attractions at Disney theme parks.
