I only play acoustic instruments so I don't know where I would fit in with electronic genres. What I would suggest though, just to get the ball rolling, would be to pick a song that isn't particularly difficult/complex and attempt to make a cover of it. At least that way we don't have to completely start from scratch to figure out how you would manage to do something like this over the internet. Kind of like a test song or something if you will...

My suggestion: Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin

It seems like a pretty versatile song where pretty much anyone with any instrument could find a way to participate.

ive decided to mess around with that song and throw some ideas on the table

    http://soundcloud.com/marketandchurch/behappy

I went reverb-happy, like a true amateur. I don't know how to mix, I'm just following youtube tutorials and abletonLive forums.

i work a double tomorrow and then friday mourning so friday evening or saturday evening, I can upload all the individual components of that song, people can reconstruct it on their own, add a beginning, a chorus, some vocals, an ending, substitute out the bass-line for a live bass, etc. I'll also upload pics of the drum patterns and midi patterns of the bells, guitars, bass line.

Also, it's just something I'm throwing on the table, please everyone, electronic or not, throw some of your own renditions of the song on the table, it'll be like a pool of talent for us to share perspectives and see all the different ways we can render that track (or another track if you guys would prefer it). I also included just the drums at the end just incase someone wanted to sample it or whatever

We could, but also I don't know if dealing with accoustic instruments is as difficult to deal with against electronic as you might think. Organic feel can still be pulled from synths, as well sampled drums are still accoustically sourced. I think the real trick there though, if we wanted to go the electronic route (like say guetting an accoustic instrument peace from you and then doing something trip-hoppy like Massive Attack or Archive), we'd probably want your music first, we'd then judge off of your composition where we'd take it and where we wouldn't, its not to say it couldn't be done the other way around but starting with the accoustics would make it much easier to match gears.

Neat! I might have time tomorrow or this weekend possibly add to this in some way...

I think I've got a few ideas here:

1) Do something that starts off with 80's rock, particularly like Def Lepard Hysteria album where its identically heavy and immersively set in that decade, mood and atmostpherics should be point on. Take that and start twisting it subtlely with things that fit but at the same time just wouldn't have been done back in the 80's, perhaps like a Muse-style revamp but more electronic tricks, sidechaining low lying synth pads to the kick drum, liquid atmospheric rushes, etc. and obviously - if there's a singer - find someone who can nail it.

2) Take Skinny Puppy's concept to today. Meaning - get someone who has the right kind of voice, in the Ogre'ish direction, *but* there will be - I repeat - will be (at least if I'm in) no screaming over trance. It'll be something a lot more like traditional SP, trainwrecking and distorting hip-hop beats generally and adding texture on top of that. Figure industrial vocals going on and then the beat from 'Let Me In' by Youngbuck kinda sparkling in at points.

If anyone's interested, here are a few of my loop experiments. None of them are mastered, but they kind of give and idea of what all I can do with my gear.

Great loops. I'll throw them in Live and see what I can come up with over the weekend.

Thanks. I'm curious to see what you can come up with. Also, if you want, I can isolate and record each individual instrument track in each of those loops, as well. Like if you want just the drums or synth or whatever.

One note, however. The Louder Than Words Beta Cessions Riff doesn't belong to me. I transcribed it by ear (and got the last measure wrong, I just noticed) from a brief section of the Beta Cessions demo track for that song by Celldweller.

wow, those are awesome, i am learning how to pan and use reverb right now (I am learning off of youtube tutorials and ableton-live forums the basics but none are that great) on your track "tranquil storm" how do you have the bassline pan like that? Is it a specific filter you use?

That bassline and its effects are done entirely within the Omnisphere synth; one of my favorites. Specifically, I messed with the spread of the multi-oscilator unison option.

i never heard of that synth, but it is very expensive. The one I want to get is massive from Native Instruments. The vsts from logic and fxpansion come up a lot on the forums I frequent but those too are expensive. Are there any free good quality synths that you or anyone else on here might know?

Omnisphere's a very good synth. I have Massive, like that a lot for basslines and poly/lead sounds, Absynth 5 is great though I'm more selective in how I'll use it.

I recently started chasing down more free virtual analog recently, HG Fortune are great (you can hardly go wrong with any of theirs), TAL, and all kinds of other free plugs that I found scouting KVR and then tracking around Youtube as well.

Another one that's phenomenally tough for $299 - reFX's Nexus 2.

I agree. For it's price, Nexus 2 is amazing. I tried a demo of it a while back, but found it a little limited; mostly to producing trance and other club music leads and basslines.

Massive is an awesome synth; so is Reaktor. Klayton, the guy behind Celldweller, has mentioned that he uses both in his music, as well as a Virus TI. I don't personally have either Massive or Reaktor, or a Virus TI (Omnisphere is so versatile and huge) but I love some of the sounds they can produce.

Try poking around on VSTPlanet for some that interest you. Everything listed there is freeware.

Here's a link to something I came up with in the last couple nights:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/78hz6y

I ended up just taking the chop based approach, so yeah it won't sound or feel too much like the originals. Also for some reason I've had a craving for irregularish beats lately which made itself manifest here.

That's pretty awesome. It actually gave me an idea for a whole new loop using those same sounds. While I'm still more of a fan of four-on-the-floor rhythms, the off-kilter-ness of it certainly got my attention.
