Tracking Cookies from WrongPlanet
http://www.lavasoft.de/products/ad-awar ... sional.php & I am sure you know how to get it
I have lavasoft and Ad watch. But I still get cookies from this site.
you don't need an external program to block cookies. you just have to refuse them. it's your choice. but you won't be able to log into wrongplanet if you block our login cookie
I live with it but I just want the others to be aware that they are getting cookies when they log on.
i think you might be confused about what cookies actually are.

I really do not want to argue but I just want people to be aware of the cookies when they log on. Let the Wrong Planet community make the decision whether its harmful or not or have them removed or stay within their computer systems.

Again, let the Wrong Planet community decide whether they want cookies in their computers tracking them. After all there are programs that erase the cookies after you use a particular site, such a Amazon.com

Again, any site which requires login also requires cookies. Cookies are not a bad thing. You're making it seem like they can be used to invade peoples privacy which is not true. It's unfair to our members to falsely imply a privacy violation. I don't know if this is your intent.

I would never disinform or intentionally harm the members of this site. They are all great people. We all share a common bond. But I do not think that they knew that they had tracking cookies. There are sites that remove their cookies after you are done with them. Cookies can also be sources for data minimg.

Again, by using the term "tracking cookies" you're implying that cookies can be used to track people. Cookies cannot track people. Cookies are just used to check whether or not you logged in. Most people know that cookies are required for logins and are just preference files that the user controls. People have complete control whether or not they want to accept cookies. Most people set their browser to accept all cookies because they know cookies can't do anything.

"Tracking cookies" especially in an age of identity theft to the average person is not a good thing and has been used by people to hurt other people. I am willing to bet there has been some people hurt by these methods. You need to convice us that all information gathered will not be used against anyone using the board.

You need to convice us(especially to the people who are novices at computers and new to the board) that all information gathered will not be used against anyone using the board. I know there are people thinking the same way. There other methods other than using a cookie to gather information on who is online. I do not think however, people who are using the site and now have to deal with a cookie in their hardrive. One I do not think that they wanted. But, I will live with the cookie. But now, everyone knows that the price of admission is a cookie.

as i said, cookies can't gather information so you shouldn't worry. The only way someone could steal your identity through a cookie is if they had physical access to your machine, and then they'd probably not find anything useful in the cookies as they tend to be encrypted. the most the thief of your computer could do is log into wrongplanet under your name before the cookie expires. and i imagine that'd be the least of your worries after your house was broken into.
I promise you this is true. if you want to provide me examples of anyone being hurt by a cookie, please do so.

Yeah I think the OP is being a little parnoid about cookies.
Anyway there are other ways he is exposing himself on the net like
"link referrer logging". Click WP then you log on to hotmail. Then Microsoft knows you came from WP. I usually open new tabs when I goto different sites if I'm concern for addition privacy.
You can be sure no matter what you do that in the future if enough
databases merge they will beable to build a pretty good picture of
who you are and know more details about your ID then you do.

Actually they can be used to invade privacy. It is also possible to access tracking cookies from other sites with a little cleaver scripting. As to being required for any site that uses logins, that is a MYTH. You can easily manage that via encoding information into http links, or by using stateful sessions (but you'd have to stop resetting all the time)
