even if it were to die tomorrow 15.5 years is nothing to scoff at. we had a good run i'd say technical issues notwithstanding.

Yep my thoughts exactly.

I think social media like Twitter and Facebook are getting more popular than internet forums so people are migrating there. Plus there is Reddit too. You have the ability to block users. You can't really on forums so you have to put up with their posts and learn to scroll right by them and not read them and learn to not respond to them and learn to not go back to that thread.

Well at least some of us think outside the box. I don't follow trends unless I want to.

Well, I am totally new here so I can't say anything about the past, but I am currently finding this site extremely helpful and encouraging so I hope that it continues onward.

I have seen the trend of moving away from forums to social media which I find disheartening -- that was part of my impetus in seeking out a new community now as previous ones have withered away -- but I think there is still an important place for forums for being able to have more in-depth discussions than social media facilitates. Social media might be easier to use for people accessing through mobile devices, though I think a simple $10 bluetooth keyboard attached to a tablet can often be an effective fix for that.

If this is a PHPBB-based forum, though, you can alter specific user privileges to individual forums. At least it was possible to around eight years ago when I was adminning with it. If I recall correctly, it was a really odd process doing things with Groups and Roles in a non-intuitive manner with really bad documentation (ie: a bunch of frustrating trial and error to figure out initially), but it was doable.

PHPBB can also port pretty successfully into XenForo to get improved functionality and better admin controls and interfacing, as well as some social-media-like features and access through mobile app (via Tapatalk) to increase community engagement. I wasn't the admin for the forum I've seen this done with so I don't know what the backend process looks like for it, but it seemed a fairly quick and painless process with the only noticeable collateral damage I saw being past PM history getting wonky due to handling differences and any stored Saved Drafts were lost.

Not that I'm trying to make any suggestions or implications that you should do anything different. I'm finding what you already have to be quite valuable as it is. Just sharing some bits of knowledge gleaned from past experiences in case they might be of use to anyone.

There were times back in the early days when the site was so busy with members posting that when you tried to send a post, you would get a message that said something to the effect that there were too many postings happening at the current time for the post to go through. There used to be a window like thing at the top of the various rooms here which showed what members were in there. Usually, there were many in each room posting one right after the other. Often times I recall posting a response to someone only to find that by the time I posted it, someone else had come in right before me. In the games area this was particularly evident. The amount of posting traffic is definitely down a lot since then.

Oh, I remember all of that so well. Those were the days! Threads quickly got buried, the place was bustling with posting. There was always something new going on. It sure has slowed down since I joined the forum 11 years ago.

Like others have said, it's the same on all forums, unfortunately. This is one of the few I know of that still has some active members left. I hate saying this, but forums are dying. I just don't understand why. Especially forums like this, which is so well suited to aspie ways of communicating. Social media hold no allure for me, and I know I'm not alone in that, so where are they all?

There are still plenty of newcomers.

Like the old days, most newcomers don't make more than a few posts.

One method I have used to determine how active a forum is how many are posting to its introduction thread and how many responses they get.

That's usually true. And it was true even back in 2014.

Forums were dying when I started joining them back in 2013. Even back then I felt like I had come in late to the party.

Uhmmm. So I am not so normal? As I made a few more posts. I am a relative newcomer.

You've made a lot of post in a short period of time.

I didn't make 5,000 posts when I started for a very long time.

You're cool, Mountain Goat. You are one of the "survivors." LOL

Whenever a newcomer comes along it is always hoped they will turn out like you have. Sadly those like you are a rarity these days.

I signed up in February, 2014. I didn't make my first post until a month later.

Actually, it was 2 weeks later. It just felt like a month.
