I get the burnout. With the exception of 2 positions I held, I was fired from every job I ever held because of burnout. One small problem: to my parents and their relatives and friends burnout means you’re a lazy, no-good motherf!cker who don’t deserve to live. The only response you get when you complain is “suck it up, buttercup! You have no reason to complain!”

True burnout isn't something you get a choice in, it's happening before you know it's happening and it's a very slippery slope indeed.

I don't think I've ever lasted in a job longer than 5 years, and that includes running my own company.

You've done exceptionally well to keep your head down if you're unhappy, so time to concentrate on an exit strategy. Get out while you're all still (mostly) friends and you can get a good reference. Nothing wrong with moving around, far better to do it constructively rather than under a cloud.

Keep all your old applications saved, too. You'll be amazed how often the same questions come up.

People are pretty surprised I've worked at the same place for 16 years, considering nowadays it's common to jump ship every few years. What's hard and not to get on a soap box, is in other nations, one doesn't have to worry about losing vacation time and health insurance, In the USA your at the mercy of an employer. This is one of the reasons I've held on, COBRA is out of the question. :(

I've heard the whole "just put blinders on" " suck it up" " your being dramatic". Easy for people who don't have my anxiety and all my other issues that are just awful on my senses .

I find a burnout certainly creeps up as by the time one realizes one is in trouble it is already in a stage when things are esculating out of control.
