The evil genius of Trump is known unofficially as "Trump derangement syndrome". It means he has master-level skills at making the opposition overreact in ways that hurt them. Despite them knowing what he is doing because he has been doing it for 10 years he somehow still triggers them into overreacting. In 2024 this resulted in enough voters thinking the Democrats were crazier than him.
I'm not sure that was the main factor in play.
You had a Republican-lite candidate trying to portray herself as an upgrade over Biden, who couldn't define how she'd be different from Biden and a working class that doesn't believe the Democrats actually represent their interests anymore.
Combine this with not enough of the economic growth over the past four years reaching the pockets of regular people and they had very little reason to believe that Kamala would be better than a Republican.
They also likely have forgotten just how crazy the first Trump term was.
They don't need to believe Dems are crazier than Trump and co, they just need to believe that Trump is more invested in their well-being than the Dems.
