If you want to vilify either major party, there is plenty there to do it. You should know, however, that it was the Republicans who freed the slaves, not the Democrats.

Yes, way back in the 1860's.

But, since then, both parties changed a lot in terms of what they stood for. Eventually, in the 1960's, about a hundred years after the death of Lincoln, the Republican Party adopted the "Southern Strategy" -- a set of covert appeals to Southern white racists.

Low hanging fruit.
1. The Mid-20th Century Realignment: A major political realignment occurred in the mid-20th century. The Democratic Party, particularly under Presidents Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson, began to champion the civil rights of minorities. This shift cost the party the "Solid South" (a historical Democratic stronghold) as Southern white Democrats switched their allegiance to the Republican Party.
2. Civil Rights Act of 1964: This most sweeping piece of legislation was proposed by Democratic President John F. Kennedy and signed into law by his successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson.
3. Vast majority of modern Democrats alive today are born after the 64 Civil rights legislation

I'm not even sure why an Australian has to explain American history to an American
From 1964 every American racist (and there are plenty of those) switched their allegiances

See The Great Switch: How the Republican & Democratic Parties Flipped Ideologies. This happened in a series of several steps between the 1860's and the 1980's.
