I don't recall having had it recently but my parents sometimes served it to the family.

It was good.

I prefer to buy the sauerkraut in glass jars. Some years ago, I had a can of sauerkraut in the pantry that I had forgotten about. One day I wanted some sauerkraut and took it out and found that it had eaten through the cans. I checked the cans beneath it and it had eaten through them as well. I haven't bought canned sauerkraut since.

I like sauerkraut, but does seem like its not exactly a popular food here, you can still find it pretty easily though. Idk if you guys generally eat sausages on bread or a bun in Poland but pretty common here and the only thing I like to put on it saurkraut and if that's not available than I don't put anything on it....most people like to slather mustard and ketchup on it and I dislike both of those.

Also I guess I haven't eaten a lot of herring but even since I was a child I've had kind of an aversion to things being too sweet. In the U.S there were a lot of commercials about kids cereal like fruit loops and coco puffs but I hated that stuff and preferred unsweetened cereal. I certainly prefer more hearty, rich and spicy flavors...I like some sweets occasionally but there are more I don't like than do like.

* or actually I guess I did eat a lot of canned herring on crackers as a kid, and my cat would finish off whatever I didn't finish quick enough.

Every breakfast place has it, and the food companies make it taste good. In contrast, the old man's hand-made is often a little awful.

Sauerkraut is awesome, and I've eaten it many times. Homemade is best. Kimchi only but wishes it were sauerkraut, IMHO

Sauerkraut us very popular in the US. The most common way to eat it is on hot dogs. Also some families serve it at Thanksgiving, especially if they are of German descent.

It is also very popular in France. When I was there, Alsatian restaurants were very popular. Alsace is a region in Eastern France. Their most popular dish is something called choucroute, which means "sauerkraut". You can Google it.

When I die, bury me with two jars of Sauerkraut, one in each hand. That's how much I like it.

I once knew someone who liked saurkraut, but when he opened a jar of it I couldn't get past the smell. I'm not a big fan of cabbage, raw or cooked but especially cooked.

But I'll eat Brussels sprouts, although they need a lot of butter and pepper on them. It can be tricky not to overcook them, which a lot of people do.

Not all sauerkraut's are created equal though. Some is really sharp tasting - too much vinegar. And it's totally non-oily, and sort of squeaks around in one's teeth while chewing it. That's not the sauerkraut deserving of a burial. The "good kind", IMHO, was cooked in a roaster with homemade deer sausage, soaking up the meat juices. This is a more German or Polish style. It has this oily, softer texture, and is reminiscient of the sausage. There are many ways to make Sauerkraut, depending on country.

There's a big difference between home-made, and store-bought.

I didn't even know there are so many sauerkraut lovers on here :D I thought about starting this topic because I was reading on the net about all those sorts of food that are considered disgusting by the inhabitants of other parts of the world :)

German heritage on both sides... So pork chops, sauerkraut, & mashed potatoes were a typical meal.

I hate when something squeaks against my teeth while I eat it. It's worse than nails on a blackboard. When I was a kid and a pickle I bit into squeaked I'd cringe and start crying and my parents thought I was weird.
