Teehee, anybody remember this guy?

I don't think he's a bad video game hero, it's hella fun to play as a little cherub who can go around possessing mutants. XD I just felt like posting him for some reason.

Deus Ex was an RPG, not an FPS.

Anyway, Gordon Freeman isn't really a strong character. He's a badass scientist with a beard and a crowbar. That's about it. No real personality there. Does he even have a single line of dialogue in Half-Life 2? He's like the guy from GTAIII, he's not a character, just a way for the player to interact with the world.

The thing about first-person games is that "you" get to be the protagonist, because the game is seen through "your" eyes. That's why a lot of FPS heroes have undefined personalities. Would you want your character to say things which you would never say?

The guy from GTA III ("Claude"). The character doesn't show any personality.

I'm probably the only person in existence that didn't hate squall...

Personally, my worst FF hero vote goes to Tidus... at least Squall didn't break down into a nervous wreck whenever the opportunity presented itself. (also, runner-up goes to Vaan from FF12...)

PS: I will, however, agree with Chibi about Rinoa... that whole plotline was so forced that its no wonder that most people hate squall for it...

I agree with you, Tidus was a bad hero, and I don't hate Squall.

Of course, but that still means they're terrible as characters. If a character has no personality, he's not really a good character.

Ah, I got another one. Commander Shepard from Mass Effect. He didn't seem to have much of a personality, he seemed to have a robotic "I'm going to complete the mission and kick some ass" attitude. The voice acting wasn't that great either. It seemed very monotone and unemotional, once again, it sounded robotic.

I remember at the debriefing of the Virmire mission, either Ashley or Kaidan (depending on who survived) comments on the others death, and how they feel it is "their fault". In the background you hear sad music playing. Everything's set for an emotional scene. Then sure enough, Shepard ruins the moment, saying something that's SUPPOSED to be comforting, but in a dull monotone voice, void of all emotion.

I loved Mass Effect, but I was greatly dissapointed in the main character.

Serious? I found Mass Effect's voice acting to be excellent across the board. I've never played as a male Shepherd though, so I can't comment on the male protagonist's voice acting. You have to take into account that 1) you're a career person in the military, so being less emotional is the norm, and 2) it has to be able to switch from being a paragon or renegade type character depending on your playstyle.

Yeah, it was the male Shepard that I found to be a bit bland. I liked the rest of the game's voice acting though. Anderson, Kaidan, Williams, Udina, all of them, very good. The male Shepard had his good moments, but it was mostly very bland. I've heard others complain about this in the past. You're last point is definently correct though. It must be for that reason that many games choose to give the main character no voice.

Jack Carver from Far Cry - such a lame poser if you ask me

CJ from GTA San Andreas - for all the **** he gets into throughout the game, stretching well beyond ghetto gangbanging, he strikes me as a wimp. Especially with that crazy Catalina girl

Serious Sam - all those cheesy one-liners, most involving the word "serious" or "seriously"

Agent 47 - I like the Hitman games, but not so much the main character himself. Perhaps it is intentional but he lacks substance

Geralt from The Witcher - same as above. I don't know if that is intentional or if it's a result of mediocre dubbing for the US version of the game.

Its characters like the above two that make me realize that no talent, skills, or education is worth having the personality of a brick wall.
